Percussionist James Mtume assigned Swahili names to each member based on their personalities — Chancler received 'Ndugu' (brother). Hancock became 'Mwandishi' (composer), Billy Hart became 'Jabali' (rock), Eddie Henderson became 'Mganga' (doctor). Chancler loved the name and used it for the rest of his career.

Herbie HancockHerbie HancockHerbie Hancockハービー・ハンコック's biggest hit wasn't his work with Miles Davis or Head Hunters — it was 'Rockit' (1983), an electro track featuring turntable scratching by GrandMixer DXT. It became one of MTV's most-played videos and won a Grammy for Best R&B Instrumental Performance. A jazz pianist delivered hip-hop culture to mainstream America.

The funky feel of 'Watermelon Man' on Herbie Hancock's 1962 debut Takin' Off came from drummer Billy Higgins, who landed his stroke right between straight eighths and swung triplets. The tune would soon travel far.
