ウィントン・ケリー、ポール・チェンバース、ジミー・コブ。名うてのトリオを組んだ三人だが、絆は演奏の外にもあった。チェンバースが1969年に世を去ると、ケリーは深酒に沈んでいく。『あいつはポールが大好きだったんだ』とコブは語る。ケリー自身も71年に後を追った。譜面の隅に並ぶ名が、これほど固く結ばれていた。
