Stanley Clarke helped define electric-bass fusion on Return to Forever (1972), yet a decade later he turned up in a very different room: Echoes Of An Era (1982), a session built around a pop/R&B singer performing straight jazz standards.

Chick Corea started from a single wish: to have Stanley Clarke — then a young, unknown bassist — play his tunes. After trying several drummers he ended up with percussionist Airto Moreira, and the lineup that fell together almost by accident became the first Return to Forever (1972), the record that launched Clarke.

Freddie Hubbard's 1970 CTI track 'Red Clay' was written to order after a producer told him to 'write a hit.' Hubbard recalled that his fellow jazz musicians sneered at him for writing something so corny — yet the commissioned tune became the record he's best remembered for.

When Lenny White played drums on Miles Davis's Bitches Brew in 1969, he was still a teenager and virtually unknown. The album that dissolved the line between jazz and rock turned out to be the session that launched his career.

Pilgrimage (2007) was the last album Brecker recorded, in the year he died, with Herbie Hancock on piano. Of a record made at the edge of death, Hancock said: 'That record is alive—one hundred percent, more than alive, Michael Brecker.' The final document was the most alive.

The call came not from Herbie himself but from Tony Williams: Miles Davis wanted Chick Corea in Baltimore in 1968 because Herbie Hancock couldn't make the date. Corea's seat at the piano began as a one-night fill-in — and became the core of Miles's electric period.
