Red Garland (1923–1984) — Piano. Led Groovy, All Mornin' Long, Soul Junction. Worked with Paul Chambers, John Coltrane, Philly Joe Jones.

His left hand sparkles with block chords. Bright, joyful, comfortable to listen to. What he does technically is difficult — but it never sounds that way, which is its own kind of genius. His swinging in the Miles Davis quintet is simply the most comfortable feeling in jazz.

Ron Carter — now the most-recorded bassist in jazz — was an Eastman student with a 1950 Ford. After a Rochester gig, Miles Davis, Red Garland and Paul Chambers had no ride to the station, so he packed them into the car and drove them there. The future master was just the kid with wheels.

Before he settled on the piano, Red Garland fought as a welterweight boxer in the early 1940s. The famously light block chords on 'Round About Midnight (1957) and Milestones (1958) belong to a man who had once earned money with his fists.
