In June 1955 an alto player fresh out of Florida sat in at the Cafe Bohemia and was a talking point within weeks. The record made that summer, Bohemia After Dark (1955), went out under the drummer's name — so Cannonball Adderley's starting point is not a leader date of his own, and his brother Nat Adderley is on it too, on cornet.

Jerome Richardson worked reed sections across the bebop era — but in 1959 he found himself in a horn section assembled under an arranger's baton, with Miles Davis, already a star bandleader in his own right, sitting in as a sideman.

In the 1960s, as a sideman in Horace Silver's band, Joe Henderson said he didn't want to make Silver's music into something other than what Silver had envisioned — he wanted to make it even more exactly what Silver had envisioned. Long before he became known for his own singular voice as a leader, Henderson framed the sideman's job as service, not self-assertion.

Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb played as one of the great piano trios. But the bond ran deeper than the bandstand: when Chambers died in 1969, Cobb recalled, Kelly sank into heavy drinking — he had loved Paul — and Kelly himself was gone by 1971.

In 1955, Cannonball Adderley moved to New York only to start a graduate program in music education, not a music career. He sat in at a club one night, the room lit up, and within weeks he had a record deal — cutting his debut album, Julian 'Cannonball' Adderley, before he'd even settled into school.
