Sam Jones served in Cannonball Adderley's quintet (1955-56 and 1959-64) and recorded his debut leader date The Soul Society for Riverside. He later anchored the Oscar Peterson Trio from 1966 to 1970.
By 1989 George Benson was known for pop and R&B hits, but Tenderly was an acoustic standards date. The drum chair went to Louis Hayes, a hard bop drummer who had been working the same way since the late 1950s.
In June 1955 an alto player fresh out of Florida sat in at the Cafe Bohemia and was a talking point within weeks. The record made that summer, Bohemia After Dark (1955), went out under the drummer's name — so Cannonball Adderley's starting point is not a leader date of his own, and his brother Nat Adderley is on it too, on cornet.
