最優秀新人賞はポップスの側の賞で、ふつうは前に立って歌う人が獲る。2011年にそれを持って行ったのはコントラバスを弾きながら歌うエスペランサ・スポルディングで、対象のChamber Music Society(2010)は弦楽三重奏を組み込んだジャズの作品だった。この部門をジャズの演奏家が獲ったのは史上初。
