Coltrane is remembered as a giant, but on this 1959 date he was only a participant on someone else's session. Once his fame grew, the record was reissued as 'Coltrane Time' — a name that had sat in the small print, suddenly promoted to the marquee.
In 1959, John Coltrane's first attempt at recording Giant Steps didn't produce a finished album, so he re-recorded most of it weeks later with a different lineup. The drummer everyone now associates with the record, Art Taylor, wasn't part of that first session.
