Joshua Redman was set to enter Yale Law School in 1991 when he won the Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition instead and abandoned law. The following year, before releasing anything under his own name, he turned up as an unknown sideman on Elvin Jones's Youngblood (1992).

Turner and Kurt RosenwinkelKurt RosenwinkelKurt Rosenwinkelカート・ローゼンウィンケル met at Berklee and became central figures in the NYC post-bop scene of the late 1990s. Rosenwinkel's complex harmony and Turner's dry, oblique lines fed each other. They appeared on each other's albums repeatedly, co-authoring the contemporary jazz guitar and saxophone vocabulary.

Michael Brecker spent more than a decade as one of the most in-demand session saxophonists in pop and jazz alike, yet didn't release an album under his own name until 1987, just before turning 40. The bassist he brought in for that belated debut was Charlie Haden.

Elvin Jones' 1992 album Youngblood was stocked almost entirely with then-unknown young players. One of them, 19-year-old trumpeter Nicholas Payton, would go on to lead his own Gumbo Nouveau and become one of the defining voices of New Orleans jazz — the veteran drummer's record turned out to be the start of someone else's career, not a victory lap.
