The Art of the Trio, Vol. 3
Brad Mehldau · 1998 · Warner Bros.
Personnel
Larry Grenadier
played Double Bass on this album
Recorded at Right Track in May 1998, Grenadier's bass gives skeletal structure to Mehldau's delicate piano writing. With Rossy's drums, the trio's unique conversational language was by now fully crystallized.
The late-90s Mehldau trio inherited the conversational model of the Bill EvansBill Evansビル・エヴァンス trio while treating rock and pop songs as raw material for improvisation. His contrapuntal right-hand lines became a signature.
In 1994, a 24-year-old and still largely unknown Brad Mehldau appeared on Joshua Redman's MoodSwing — two years before his own Art of the Trio series began the career that made him one of the most acclaimed pianists in jazz.
