On February 21, 1954, Clifford BrownClifford Brownクリフォード・ブラウン electrified the Birdland audience during the A Night at Birdland Vol.1A Night at Birdland Vol.1Art Blakey · 1954 live session. His luminous tone and endlessly inventive improvisation became one of the most dramatic documents of hard bop's birth. Brown would die in a car accident the following year, at 25.

Moanin' (1958) first appeared under the plain eponymous title 'Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.' The opening tune, written by pianist Bobby Timmons, caught on so widely that the whole record came to be known by its name — the sideman's song, not the leader's, gave the album its title.
