Turner and Kurt RosenwinkelKurt RosenwinkelKurt Rosenwinkelカート・ローゼンウィンケル met at Berklee and became central figures in the NYC post-bop scene of the late 1990s. Rosenwinkel's complex harmony and Turner's dry, oblique lines fed each other. They appeared on each other's albums repeatedly, co-authoring the contemporary jazz guitar and saxophone vocabulary.

Lionel Loueke, a guitarist from Benin who was still relatively unknown, played on Herbie Hancock's River: The Joni Letters (2007). The album won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 2008, a rare triumph for a jazz record over mainstream pop and rock competition.
